phasing

The project is being developed in three phases

Phase 1: June 2023 > December 2024.

Thanks to the National Dance Center's research and heritage grant (obtained in May 2023), a small research team, made up of Mathieu Bouvier, Alice Godfroy, Jérémy Damian and Loïc Touzé, is developing the first studies in the field and elaborates the problematization of the research questions. The analyzes produced are editorialized with a view to their publication online.

Phase 2: June 2024 > December 2025.

As part of a large-scale research project of IRMAS (Research Institute for Music and Performing Arts) / Hes. so (Universities of specialized schools of Western Switzerland), whose application is supported by the research department of the Manufacture, university of the performing arts in Lausanne (Yvane Chapuis and Julie Sermon),  the entire research team is pursuing field studies, a program of “research-action” situations (Improvisation Summer School, laboratories, seminars, interviews...) and educational transmission (educational and professional workshops), and publishes its analyzes by means of a website dedicated toFabulous Techniques, affiliated with the websiteFor an atlas of figures.

Phase 3: 2026 > 2027.

This third phase, which will be the subject of a later presentation, focuses on confronting the forms and issues of these artistic practices with the speculative, playful and experimental practices that are flourishing today in various fields of the “social clinic”.

méthodes

methods

Field studies

Members of the research team (and associate researchers) study the practices proposed by artists, in experimental situations, in workshops scheduled by cultural or educational institutions, or during events. public. Alone or in pairs, the researchers spend a few days in these workshops and collect their observations in the mode of participant observation. Interviews allow researchers to collect the experiences of certain participants and to question the artists on their approaches. To this descriptive material are added audiovisual traces when possible, and any archival documents, requested from the artists.

Bimonthly seminar

Between October 2023 and March 2025, a bi-monthly seminar lasting approximately 4 hours, makes it possible to share analyses, identify cross-cutting issues, and carry out collective supervision of surveys.

An experimental school

Research-action situations are developed within the framework of an experimental school which takes several forms:

  • Special Edition "Fabulous Techniques" of theImprovisation Summer School #3(dir. Alice Godfroy, University Côte d'Azur, Institut Universitaire de France). In September 2024, this third edition of thesummer school improvisation will be an opportunity to form an experimental school with around forty participants (artists, students, researchers), gathered for ten days on an autonomous site. With a self-managed program of practical and theoretical workshops, this experimental school will be an opportunity to transmit and question the practices studied, and to invent new ones.

  • Research laboratories. As part of the program for the Master's "Improvisation en danse" at the Université Côte d'Azur - Nice, Alice Godfroy organizes laboratory stays at the Maison de l'improvisation, Recoubeau-Jeansac, in Drôme. This is an opportunity to share moments of practical and theoretical work with some of the artists involved in the research project and Master's students.

  • Theoretical workshop at the Manufacture. The research team meets at the Manufacture for 4 days to share the practices studied, the analyzes and their tools. It is also an opportunity to deepen the theoretical issues by confronting them with points of view and external resources, from anthropology, philosophy, or social clinic. To this end, two “specialist” personalities in one or other of these fields are invited to join the workshop for the last 2 days (see guests). These people are invited to testify to their work, and to question our research based on their knowledge and experiences. These workshops are filmed, in particular the practical experimentation sessions, and the theoretical work sessions are transcribed.

  • Educational workshop at the Manufacture : two weeks of workshops offered to students of the Manufacture (dance and theatre) by Loïc Touzé, Yasmine Hugonnet and Mathieu Bouvier. This workshop offers a combination of practice times led in the morning by Loïc Touzé, and workshop times in the afternoon, led collectively around research surveys. The practices studied as part of the project are transmitted to the students, in support of the documents and analyzes produced by the research team. The students design a collective memory tool to collect these transmissions and process their experience (collective logbook, tumblr, etc.)

Interviews, resonances

Mathieu Bouvier and two members of the research team carry out a series of 4 or 5 major filmed interviews with eminent personalities from the world of research (seeguests). It is a question of putting in resonance the stakes of the fabulous techniques with the problems which cross today the human sciences, particularly under the prism of the speculative thought. These interviews will be carried out at the Manufacture, in Lausanne, or at the Center national de la danse, in Pantin, at the convenience of the guests.

Deliverables

Field studies gradually provide the analytical materials for the production of "deliverables": they may be articles of variable formats, interviews, diaries, scores, literary texts, or any other resource in an innovative format (audio podcast, tumblr, video...). The thematic orientation of these deliverables is designed by the authors in concert with the collective, in order to ensure a good distribution of the thematic axes of the research. The resources produced for the deliverables are subject to peer review, within the circle of the research collective.

Editorialization and promotion of research

A restricted editorial committee (Mathieu Bouvier + 2 team members) takes care of the editorialization of the resources produced by all the researchers.

A webmaster designs a website specific to the "Fabulous Techniques" project, associated with the site Pour un atlas des figures (resulting from a previous research project led by Mathieu Bouvier and Loïc Touzé, led by the Manufacture, and supported by the 'IRMAS, Hes.so in 2017). The content of the research is editorialized on this site: articles written by the researchers of the team, interviews with artists and practitioners, scores for games and experiences presented in the form of "manuals". practices, audiovisual documentation, interviews and resources produced with or by the invited personalities.
